Signs of Rising Damp

Bricks are highly permeable and moisture will travel through them quickly. It is vital to have any suspected rising damp inspected by a damp surveyor and then handled professionally with the assurance that it will be stopped in its tracks and eradicated.

Rising Damp can manifest itself in several ways:

  • Peeling wallpaper
  • Damp or damaged plaster
  • Damp or damaged skirting boards
  • A tide line on the walls
  • Yellow/brown stains on the walls
  • Fluffy, powder or  residue on plaster

Why does Rising Damp Occur?

Rising damp is caused by moisture being pulled into the wall material this occurs below the walls, usually from the ground. It often also occurs from a failed damp proof course which has deteriorated over time or has been incorrectly installed.

Rising damp can also occur when wall construction ages. The bricks become more permeable, developing cracks in the material and creating channels which pull up moisture into the wall – known as capillary action. If a wall was constructed badly, or a long time ago, then rising damp can be a real problem.

Rising Damp Solutions

It is important to know that the provision of a barrier against rising damp will only prevent further moisture rising from the ground and that all other sources of dampness must be eliminated as well. Dampness, Condensation and consequential Mould growth or Fungal Decay causes deterioration to the structure of buildings and can present a serious health hazard to the people living there.

Our team will undertake an expert analysis from one of our Derby Damp Specialists which will result in a thorough plan for the permanent elimination of damp from your home or premises, which may include:

  • Removal of any damp plaster
  • Chemical injections to the damp proof course to repair it
  • Adding a salt neutraliser to walls to dissolve salts present from damp penetration
  • Add a coat of tanking that bonds to damp brickwork and creates a waterproof barrier
  • Applying a waterproof sand and cement interior render
  • Finish with a smooth skim of coat plaster
